  • Updating instances

    Hi-

I have a scene that I had a bunch of instances and it rendered fast. When I un-grouped these instances my scene now takes bout 10 minutes saying that it is updating instances. I understand instances, and the reason to use them, but I don't have a whole lot of objects that I un-grouped. This is a small building with a dozen, or so, windows. When I un-grouped the window frames my render times went way up (100's of hours) and it takes forever to cancel the render.

Annoying things like these often need a primitive solution: if you need to 'start fresh', use the clone and align tool to re-clone your source instance to where the existing instances are.

Groups can be fiddly with instancing because when max groups things it actually links them to the source group, so all kinds of stuff happens when you ungroup and un-link complex networks.

I ended up merging into a new scene 3-4 times. Each time I merged it got a little better.
