  • VrayIES rotation in vray 2.0

I am running a trial version of vray on max 2011. Again, i am having issues with positioning the ies light. Without the web mesh it's really hard to see whats wrong, but it's definitively wrong. By rotating the ligth manually i got it to point the right way, but, the fixture is linear and is still in the wrong direction along the other axis. If i try to use one of the rotation parameters within the light, max just crashes.

Can you post the IES light here or email it to me at vlado@chaosgroup.com so that we can check what's wrong?

    Best regards,

      It's this file

supposed to be linear and pointing upwards.

it seems that in order to get the right spread, you need to rotate it by 90 deg i Z axis when using the default photometric light. But no matter what, vrayies is nowhere near giving the right shape

I am trying to convince these people to buy vray, since they are using 3d studio max to test and explore their designs. Since they are all lighting designers, it is imperative that the ies lights work flawlessly and are easy to use.

Thanks for the file; will fix this, but in the meantime you can always use the 3ds Max IES lights.

yes, i notice that it does not seem to impact the rendering times as it used to 4-5 years ago when vrayies came out. Then it was a world of difference.

One thing i noticed though. When i use a normal max ies file, for a linear fixture, it seems to be casting the shadow from the very center of the fixture, the pivot point. I was supposed to have a very long line consisting of continuous linear fixtures. They were running through some panels, and instead of lighting them all, the fields that were obscured, as in not having the center of the IES light between them were pitch black because they were in shadow.

Unfortunately i cant post any images of this but i hope i'm making sense. Seems to me that a linear IES light is acting as a point light in terms of shadows. And this doesnt seem right.

BTW do you know whats going on with this particular file? It seems that in MAX i need to rotate it by 90 around the axis as well. But its easy to tell because of the light distributing mesh.

I just received 3 vray 2.0 dongles, and they're sitting on my desk (no account to download yet). How are things looking on this front. The company is going to kill me if it turns out that ies files are impossible to work with. They keep giving credit to mental ray...

Preview of the web mesh in the viewports has already been implemented; if you want to take a look, please email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com
