  • cannot output 16bit greyscale png

i get the following error as if i am on a 32 bit machine, see attachment.

I am trying to create a dispalcement texture so need the resolution to be quite high before i put it in to photoshop, and also need better quality than 8 bit greyscale.

There should be no probs as i have 64 bit max, and 12gigs ram. does anyone know if i am doing anything wrong. The resolution is 5000x2500ish, but it wont even do it on small fence renders

It works for other formats, and also the other types of png, just not the greyscale png options...8bit...16bit.

um, never saved to greyscale pngs myself, could be a vray bug? anyway, it's good you can switch to tif or exr.

Are you setting it to save as 16-bit PNG file before you render? Or are you trying to save from the VFB? You should be doing the former.

@stefthomas...I have just tried both it still doesn't write the output file. I think it might be a bug. I am using 2012 max, and vray2.0. I cvan save any other format, just not greyscale pngs

This happened to me with older version of max, I never knew why so I decided to use other format...
