  • vraytoon outline only - like silhouet render

    Hello,
Do you know how to achieve an outline stule render only, a silhouet, from an object?
I tried with vray toon + tranparent shader + disabling all GI on the object + disabling shadow + transparency set to 0.01 but still, it is not a silhouet.

I know that Finaltoon do it easily but I was wondering how to set it without another plugin.
    Thanks

hi.. when you say silhouette.. you mean a solid flat colour? or something transparent? as afaik a silhouette doesnt have transparency.

a solid flat colour is easy: just use a vray lightmtl, or a standard material set to self illuminated.

to get a transparent, flat effect its more difficult.. youll need to render the people separately and then adjust the opacity after. there was a thread about methods to achieve this in a render somewhrere, but i think the conclusion was its not simple.

by silhouette, I mean only the outline in black line and nothing solid in the middle. So it is not a solid flat color, theyre is no solid at all, just the outlines edges.
As seen on the thumbail on the previous post, I can achieve the edge only effect by putting the object transparency to 0.01 but then all edges are coming out, not only the outlines one.

You have the "hide inner edges" option in VRayToon; does it not work for you?

        Best regards,

Yes I did, but the "Hide inner edges" doesn't work with tranparency material as seen on the attached file.

Can you post a simple file for this here?

            Best regards,

I'd also like to know if this is possible.
              Kind Regards,

                Test_Silhoutette.zip

Here is a simple test scene, one teapot one vray plane one extruded line.
                Line is 100 transparent
Vraytoon is apply to this line but the backline are visible...

Hide Inner edges is not present on the vray 1.5 version or it is for maya not for max?

The "hide inner edges" option is new for V-Ray 2.0. Here is what the render looks like with it - is this what you need?

                    hi,
just deselect "visible to refraction/reflection" in object properties....hide inner edges works in 2.0 like this... the bottom of the extruded line is a problem with z fighting, cause its z=0 lkie the vray plane...

                      Thanks,
the problem is still there, the base backline of the extruded line is visible.

Unfortunatly Vray 2 took 3 time more rendering time than Vray 1.5, so I have to downgrade to the old version.
I would like to install the nighty version, but the mail I received from Vray support is really not engaging "It may solve your issues" = my interpretation is: we didn't look specifically at your rendering time problem but as we work on different other bug, yours may have been solve as well!

the problem with the baseline is because it is at a hight of z=0 the same as the plane. just move the line up or down a little

Hm, was it a scene were the default geometry type for the ray caster was set to "dynamic"? In any case, there were a number of scenes that I looked at, which rendered slower with the original V-Ray 2.0 version compared to V-Ray 1.5. I guess some of them could have been from you. I should say that all of them render as fast as (or faster than) V-Ray 1.5 now with the latest builds and in the new service pack.

                          Vlado

ID:	844945We still face a problem.
The vray plane is not acting like others geometry.

The silhouet came out nicely on geometry but not a the vrayplane.
                              - Vray plane with vraymaterial, no change in vray property
                              - body material with IOR set to 1 in refract
                              - body unchek visibility in flect/regract in vray property.
                              - Vray toon with inner edge checked.

Can't figure out what is wrong.
