It just looks this way; the actual colors are quite smooth (if you brighten up the element you'll see the banding goes away). You can probably apply some dithering to the result to make the transitions less obivous.

Humh, thats a bit unfortunate, everytime I comp it I get banding in my final images. I noticed banding "goes away" if I make it brighter but then I guess its just getting pushd to area where contrast kick in between light and dark. In any case Im using render roughtly at the brigtness I send you so I cant really make them brighter.

What u mean with dirthering? - noise in PS ?

          Thanks, bye.

Dithering is like what you see in the 3ds Max frame buffer - slight noise added to make up for the limited 256 levels of the display. It's not exactly "noise" though - it is calculated in a special way. I don't know if PS can do that, but I know there are other programs that can.

Other than that, any compositing should preferably be done in floating point, not 8 bits.

              Heya

Right, I know mental ray got tick for dirthering but I cant see it in Vray - how can I apply it in max?

I know that comps have to be done in 32 bits but photoshop is quite bad at 32 bit, I work in dynamic 32 bit which still preserve the 32 bit depth but works a lot faster. In any case I did try noising it in past but it only made things worse...

I'll have to do a test print and see if my printer print images with bandings or its just display issue... even tho its weird both of my dell and cintiq21 has it.

              Thanks, bye.

I got looots of banding in VFB in max! Even saving to .png/.tga/.exr - banding still here. Only .bmp works smoothly. Sometimes, when saving once again to .pn./exr./tga help. But in VFB - banding! Banding2 - is how it looks after saving. I'm lucky today

So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Is that how it looks in the 3ds Max frame buffer too (when you clone it from the VFB)?

Ok; how many lights do you have? We got a similar issue in a particular case with multiple lights when the light cutoff was not zero.

                      Best regards,

About 40 with default cutoff. But saved pic sometimes is good. No banding. Saving to .bmp now.
