  • Vray RT GPU and Maya 2012 not working

we have two workstations using Maya 2012 and Vray 2.2. One with a Quadro 5000, the other with a Geforce GTX560TI

    drivers:
    Quadro 270.51 (also tried 266.45)
    Geforce: 296.10

On both machines RT GPU gets stuck on the runup to the rendering with the msg "Building OpenCL trace..." (see screenshot). A GPU monitoring tool shows no activity on the GPU (no memory or GPU usage)

Previously with Maya 2009 and Vray 2.0 I had no problems...

Also: RT CPU is working just fine

You will need to let it run and compile the OpenCL; this may take quite a while, depending on the graphics card and video driver version.

      Best regards,
      Vlado

Having same trouble in 3ds Max, even with the active shade window. It never took so long in the old version. I'm wondering how long is "quite a while"? At what point should we think it's crashed?

The GPU code in the older version was simpler; now we have motion blur and other stuff going on. And the code is expected to get even more complex for future builds.

It depends on the GPU, the driver version, and the amount of main RAM that you have. On my machine in particular it takes several minutes, but I know that some people had to wait for an hour.

If it crashes, it will be very obvious. If it just sits at "Building OpenCL program...", then it's still working.

You can also try the CUDA engine in the latest service pack; it does not require compilation and starts straight away.

          Best regards,
          Vlado

Thanks very much Vlado. I am very excited to try it. I am rolling back my driver version now to 270, and hopefully will get it working (I'm running a Quadro 5000). I haven't been able to get the "Choose Open CL" device dialogue to work (getting the failed to update OpenCL device error). Fingers crossed! And thanks again for the updates.

You might have to run it as an administrator (right-click on the tool > Run As Administrator...) otherwise it may fail to set the environment variable even if your user has administrative rights.

              Vlado

Yes, the run as administrator worked. Oh, Windows 7-why do you have to be that way?

You won't have to do that if you turn the Windows 7 UAC system off, but it is usually not recommended for security reasons.
