  • Vray Proxy from Frost, crazy render times with Refractions

    Hi,

in my scene, there is a water surface, created using Thinkbox Frost. I have applied a VRay material with settings for water and with Frost it renders about 15mins per frame.

As we have this mesh in several scenes and passes, I wanted to cache this mesh as Vray Proxy, so Frost won't calculate a new mesh for every frame in each pass over and over again. So I created a vray mesh from the animation, which takes ages but works.

I loaded this vray mesh as Vray Proxy back into my scene and everything is working fine as long as I don't use any refraction with my material. If I do so, the rendering times per frame (from 15mins with Frost object) go up to 2 hours.

So I am wondering what's going on there. If anyone could point me into the right direction, this was great!

could this be related to the multithreading issue some other people have mentioned with proxies? do you have a machine with a load of cores?

Yup, 24 Cores (2*12 using a X5690 dual CPU machine). But why's that only in the refraction, then?

no idea.. just remember somebody else complaining about slow rendering in a scenario like this.. i could dig out the thread , but i remember one hack/;workaround was to render 2 frames simultaneously on the machine using half the cores for each...

having said that maybe see if anyone else can shed more light..

You can email to vlado@chaosgroup.com for a build that hopefully works better.

          Best regards,

I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

Thank you very much, Vlado. I sent you an email but your autoresponder told me you were out of office until next week.
