Why would DR render come out much darker than non-DR render?

This simple scene just has vray lights and a standard direct light for illumination.

It looks like I forgot to set the direct light to Vrayshadows, but rather it was set to raytraced shadows. Not sure why this would make a difference when it comes to DR but it seems to.

The Raytrace shadows behave unpredictably with V-Ray; sometimes they will render as though everything is in shadow, sometimes they will render everything without shadows etc.
