  • Max crashes with Hair and Fur in MrPri mode

    Hey,
as the title says I am getting an instant crash when I am trying to render a simple plane with the Hair and Fur WSM set to MrPrim mode. In Geometry mode it renders fine. When I tested the very same scene on another machine it renders fine. It seems to be related to my workstation.

Software Specs: Max2011 Sp2 64bit, Vray 2.30.01, default light gray UI scheme.

    Regards

    Hi Oliver,
Probably it's hardware related, can you post some hardware details of your workstation (OS, CPU, Number of Cores, Memory installed).
Did you test with same 3DS Max and V-Ray version on the other machine, which renders fine?

      Hey Tashko,
thanks for the reply. I tested the same scene on another workstation, which has other hardware specs but the same Vray and Max version. It renders fine on that other machine.
The specs of my workstation are:

      - HP Z800 Workstation
      - Dual Xeon X5650 @2.67GHz
      - 48GB Ram
      - nVidia Geforce 580
      - Windows 7 Professional 64bit
      - Max 2011 SP2, Vray 2.30.01

      Thanks in advance

        Thank you for the information!
We will make some tests and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Could you post the V-Ray log file as soon as you get this crash, also is it possible to share the specification of the second workstation, which renders fine?

How many cores do you have in your workstation? There was a bug in the Hair&Fur engine where it would crash on machines with more than 16 cores. This was fixed in 3ds Max 2012, I think. Not sure if this is your issue though.

          Best regards,

            Vlado,
my machine has 12 logical cores, but I get displayed 24 because of hyperthreading. The other one I tested it on has 8 logical cores, 16 with Hyperthreading. Will try to disable HT, maybe thats the solution.

            Regards
