  • What is working maximum resolution for VRay. It freezes all the time.

We are using on-line rendering farm with 100 dual 6 core xeons. The image size is 18000x12000.
Their setup dont have option to save as vrimg, so we using jpg to save the final. It freezes at some point and not moving.
So what is the maximum res we can go? Thanks!

Did you explore bitmap pager options? It may help in this case. Why do they not allow to save vrimg? do they allow any output from vray framebuffer? if they do, you can try saving .exr from vray frame buffer and that is in fact a vrimg (sort of). Lastly you can see if the machine are on par with ram, and that they are not running out of ram rendering such large image.

I tried to run this size on the same spec system at office Dual 6-core xeon (X5690-3.47GHz) 24Gb RAM overnight to find out at the next morning system have zero free memory in task manager.
It runs out of 24 Gig of memory!
Thanks Dmitry, I will check the rest.

Yup, probably just holding such large image in the buffer alone is choking all the ram. There is a couple of options you can explore as I pointed out above, but one of them would be rendering in tiles, or if you can get vrimg working then it will solve your issue. Also unchecking "use memory buffer" will help too.

All you need to do is to send job to back burner and use tile rendering. Set tile to be max 200 pixel u will end up with 200 pixels by 12000 x 9 slashes.

There are also scripts on scriptspot that do it for u in max

It depends. 200% enlagement looks like original. Compare to photoshop it do much better job.

Make sure to turn off the "rendered frame window" in backburner/max. It really helps quite a bit with any renderer, I've found.
