  • Coloured Glass Windows - Struggling

    Hi all

I'm trying to make coloured glass windows. I have various windows all with a thickness of abou 8mm or 10mm.
I've tried various appraoches and its a bit hit and miss which is rediculous

Ok so far only my red glass looks as expected. Make normal clear glass (black diffuse, white reflection fresnel ticked, white refraction, red fog)
any other colour just comes out as clear glass or slighttly black. Also tried changing diffuse colour, doesnt seem to make difference

Only thing that seem to work is to make either r,g, or b right up to 255
But this kinda prevents you from making it a specific colour

With fog the main dangerous parameter is the multiplier. You've got to get that correct or else your colours will be pretty unpredictable. Vray is based around a single system unit (1 centimetre, metre or whatever you use) representing a fog mulitplier of 1.0.

    So as a quick example:

Check your system units to find out what vray is looking at. Lets say they're centimeters.
Make a box with a width, height and depth of 1cm.
Make a vray material, white refraction, no reflect.
Set the fog colour to 50,150,0 - leave the multiplier at 1.
Set your environment colour to pure white.

If you render the scene you should have the exact same fog colour as you see in your material editor.

Next copy the box, and set the size to 10cm on each side. Keep the same material and render again. You should get a black box.

The problem is the multiplier of the fog is set for a smaller depth, so it's building up too much.

So if your new object is ten times deeper than the first one, you need to divide your fog multiplier by ten to get the same effect. So if you duplicate the first fog material, set the multiplier to 0.1 and apply it to your large box, you should get the same look when you render.

The main thing that's going to help you with fog is first of all, find out your system unit. One system unit is equal to a fog multiplier of 1. If you use the tape helper object you can measure the depth of your object, and then if you divide the fog multiplier of 1 by the depth of this new object, you'll get the value you need to put into the fog multiplier to get the look you want. Also note that if you're using fog, since it's a refractive material the colour that refracts through it will massively affect the look. Like if you've got a black object behind your red fog glass, the black will overpower the fog and you see no red.

      Yes I understand all that.
      My multiplier is at 0.02
      my windows are 10mm thick

I have 4 different colours. BUT, the only time when you see ANY colour in the glass is if the fog colour is something saturated like 0,0,255 or 255,255,0. Anything smaller than that for example 100,45,126, and it either comes out clear glass, or it comes out slightly black
      Kind Regards,
      Morne

Sounds like there's something up with your system or object scale. Could you pop up a simple max 2012 scene of the glass?

Also check the normals on the glass. If all else fails, get us a scene to vray@chaosgroup.com and our support guys will look at it.

          Best regards,

            A box - 500x500x10mm - full refraction - fog color 100,45,126 - multiplyer 1 - affect shadows. Scene set to millimeters, 1unit=10mm.

            Included the material settings aswell.

Here is one example - nothing special - black diffuse / white reflection and refraction / fog color
