I was rendering an animation today and noticed a strange behavior that I've never ran into before. First, I'm using Max9 with Vray 1.5 sp5.
Certain frames, while rendering, were hanging up. So, here's what it was doing:
I'm watching this happen on a new server I have setup as a render node. I'm looking at the render dialog. I watched, as a normal (successful) render frame was finishing. Now, it's time for the next frame to render, all of a sudden, it goes right to "rendering". The dialog shows the render time ticking away but no image (black frame buffer) and no progress movement and it will think it's rendering and go on for ever. It doesn't trigger any errors, it just thinks it's rendering but it's rendering nothing.
So basically, at the beginning of loading the frame, the dialog does NOT show "transforming verticies" "loading bitmaps" "building motion blur raycast accellerator", etc. or any of the other preparations you see before a render starts - and it also skips doing the irradiance map passes. - it just goes right to rendering a black frame buffer.
So I need to reset the server from the BB monitor window or shutdown the BB server and restart it on the node, then it works fine. There's no rhyme or reason. It just does it on random frames. It seems to happen more on short render time frames - frames that take less than a couple minutes. Longer frame times it doesn't happen. I've never had this happen before. At first, I thought it was just the new server (dual quad core Xeons, 2.5. 8gigs ram, Windows Server 200 but it did happen on a couple of my other machines (just 2 or 3 frames) that I've had for years so I figured it's not just the new server having the issue.
Has this ever happened to anyone else? Like I said, I've been using Vray for almost 10 years and have not seen this happen before. I'd like to figure this out so I don't have to babysit my renders.
