is there a way to override every diffuse map and color with 50% gray...?
id like to keep my refl, bump, gloss and dispmaps...

    Hello there,

Vray has an option to override all scene materials with a specific material - it is located under Global Switches Rollout > "Override Mtl".
You can create a 50% gray material and plug it in Override Mtl slot - and Vray will use this material instead of already assigned ones.
There is even Include/Exclude List which could help you if you want to include or exclude Overriding of any objects in the scene - this could be very helpful if for example you have interior scene and the illumination comes through glasses - in the case you could exclude glasses objects otherwise they will block the light that comes from outside.
If you want to override only diffuse slot you could do this by script -there are a few free scripts that could help you like "VMC" (Vray Material Control).
