  • Windows 8: DR Spawner will not start with windows....

I have always had the DR spawner in my startup folder so that it fires up as soon as windows does. Upgrading my nodes to W8 and this is no longer working. the RT render server will start, but not the spawner. I have it running as admin and tried all the things I can find for general windows help. I can manually start it no problem, it just won't run automatically.

Anyone having this issue and figured out a solution?

Alternatively: anyone running it as a service with W8 and having no issues? I recall there being some problems in the past and I ended up using the startup approach to get around it, but that was with XP and Vista.

thanks in advance for any input

    Hi,

It works fine in my test, when i paste "Launch V-Ray DR Spawner" shortcut to the Start menu/Startup folder.
What is the 3DS max and V-ray version that you are using?
Do you use this Windows "Startup" folder path: C:\Users\_your user_\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup .

      Hi Tashko -

I am using Design 2012x64 with the nightly build from Dec 4.

I put the shortcuts in the same place you did, but they will not fire up unless I am logged in using the (normally disabled) administrator account. I tried that last night and it's the only thing that worked.

I have 3 machines updated to W8 so far, and none will run the programs at startup, one will not work for DR when the spawner is running as a service and 2 will. It's really a pain I am going to switch them all to the admin account and see how that goes, but it really should work with a normal administrator type user account.

        Hi Brett,

Please make sure that V-Ray spawner is started as administrator.

one will not work for DR when the spawner is running as a service and 2 will.
You can try to change the service Login properties (to use admin account/user and pass) for this node.

        looking forward for your feedback.

I was running everything as administrator for sure, but it didn't make any difference. Seems like it should, but anyway - running everything under the admin account was the only consistent solution for all the machines.

I did not try running the service with the different login ID, but its running at startup now so I won't be using the service route I don't think.

          Thanks for the help.

vrayrtspawner.exe will attempt to write a log file in the temporary folder for the current user; it's called VRRTSpawner.log - does it say anything useful?

            Best regards,
            Vlado

I can't tell you now unfortunately - I deleted the user administrator account and am now only running the built in admin account which works just fine.
