  • .VRSCENE export - are multi/sub-object materials supported?

I'm attempting to transfer a scene from VRay for max to Vray for Maya. It's a single VRay proxy with a complex multi/sub-object material (25 submaterials) in an otherwise empty scene.

Looking at the .VRSCENE file in notepad, I can see that the material definition only covers the first submaterial and none of the others. Since proxies can only have a single material assigned, and this would seem to be a very common workflow for anyone working cross-platform, I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong;, but there are so few controls I have no idea what that might be.

If multi/subs aren't supported in a .VRSCENE, how do you get complex materials over to Maya from Max?

How do you export the .vrscene? For more recent builds, I'd recommend going through the .vrscene exporter in V-Ray RT, rather than the MaxScript one. The V-Ray RT exporter is a more complete one, and I know for a fact that it handles Multi/Sub-object materials properly.

    Best regards,

Never touched RT, so yes, I was using the Maxscript one (which also crashes with an undefined variable relating to displacement if the default arch & design matlib is loaded in the material editor). - VRay 2.3.01/max 2013 x64. I'll give it a whirl.

The .VRSCENE file is much longer when exporting from VRayRT using activeshade (when set as the production renderer it just hung on "waiting for renderer" forever.) Now to see if the Maya guy can import it.

        Thanks!

Yes, the point is only to export it, not to render it There is also a MaxScript command to do just the export: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/rt10..._maxscript.htm - look for the vrayExportRTScene command (using this command requires the current ActiveShade renderer to be V-Ray RT).
