  • Vray 2.4: Caustics and Affect Shadows Option

In the changelog I can see that this should be fixed. However, so far I can't confirm this.

I have a headlight of a car here which I need to turn on for a night shot. But when I turn on the affect shadows option in the glass material of the headlight cover, I loose the caustics on the bumper. Turn it off and everything looks fine again. Please take a look at the attached scene file.

    Thanks and regards

    Oliver

A material will either produce caustics, or affect shadows (otherwise you get double light contribution). This was the case before; it is also the case now.

What was fixed, was that if caustics were enabled, there was no way to get a material to affect shadows, but not to generated caustics. This was a problem if, f.e. you wanted caustics for just a small glass object in the scene, but wanted just transparent shadows for large windows, for example.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

I only act like I know everything, Rogers.

I am not sure I got you right, but I think that is exactly what I want to achieve. But I cant get it to work. As soon as I tick the affect shadows box, the caustics are gone outside the headlight cover.

You are able to use the "affect shadows" option only for materials which you don't need to produce caustics.
Both options, "affect shadows" and caustics can't work together on same material, you will get double light contribution.
