I have discovered that if you have a texture assigned in the "use texture" slot of a Vray light set to Plane then switch to Sphere type there is still some effect going on. If you toggle back to plane, disable the Use Texture checkbox, then back to Sphere you can see a drastic change (light appears black with checkbox on, normal when off).
