  • VRay ies light and opening maxfiles

    Hi all.

Does anyone else have this problem? Max 2013 x64. Vray 2.40.03

If I have just one VrayIES light in my file, whilst i'm working away it's fine, no problems at all. When I save the file and re-open it the maxfile crashes. Every time. It's very annoying. After going back one increment at a time, all of which were crashing I have found that the file will open, with these ies lights in, but only if they are hidden.

So in conclusion. If i save the file and one ies light is visible in any viewport, when i re-open the file it crashes. If I hide all the ies lights, either by ticking the hide by lights catergory, or just selecting the is lights and hiding them, and save the file it open no problem and i can unhide them and carry on.

This is really really frustratin because if I do loads of work, forget to hide them before I save, my file then becomes unopenable.......

Has any one experienced this? If so, any ideas of what i can do to stop it happening?

Can you get us a file that we can reproduce this with?

      Best regards,

        Maxfile attached.

The error occurs with one VrayIES light in a brand new file so no other geometry. Just this morning the file seems to error every time i choose an ies file. I have chosen many different ies files (20+) from various manufacturers and they all error, every time.

        VrayIES error.zip

This file is one VrayIES light. The ies file is included in the .zip. If peeps can download and see if they can open it with no problem the please let me know!

I hope someone can find a reason my why maxfiles crash. I've never had this problem before using max 2012.

        Thanks everyone.

Hi, I cannot reproduce it here. I have tried with the scene provided and made a scene myself, following the description. Can You please tell me which product update for 3ds Max 2013 You have installed. Also what error messages are displayed. And if 3ds Max offers to send a report when crashing it creates a file named 3dsmax_minidump.dmp, it resides in the temporary files folder which can be accessed by typing %temp% in the windows explorer (It will take You to a path that is similar to this "C:\Users\sasho\AppData\Local\Temp"). If You could crash 3ds Max and get us a fresh .dmp it might be useful.

Ok, hopefully we can get to the bottom of it.

Product version: 15.0 Product Update 6 commercial.

The error window is an Application Error. "An error has occured and the application will now close. Do you want to attempt to save a copy of the current scene? I have attached the dump file.

                3dsmax_minidump.zip

Might it be a plugin or something like that that might cause it?

Standard Photometric ies lights work so i'll use those for now.

                I appreciate your help.

                  Hello,

I succeeded to reproduce the crash with OpenGL viewport but it happens everytime when an IES light is created and IES profile is selected, even during scene creation.
We are looking for a solution. Meanwhile, if you use OpenGL, you could try to switch to Nitrous or Direct3D viewport driver.

Ooooooooo. Interesting. I was indeed using OpenGL. Changed to nitrous and guess what......It still crashes when opening that file.

But when starting a new file, using Nitrous, it's fine and dandy. I will carry on using Nitrous, I switched to OpenGL so I am able view my viewports when i remotely access my machine. But I'm happy to not do that for a in the hope that Vlado can come us with a solution for the next version of VRay.

Thanks, you've made my day. Thumbs up to you.

                          Thank you,

The crash should be solved in the latest nightly builds. Let me know if you still experience any problems with VRayIES.

                            Hi guys!

I have very similar problem on our render farm - some of the computers could not open the scene with VrayLight in it.
I've tried to open max remotely on one of the faulty machine and I can not even create VrayLight in new scene - it crashes immediately.
                            We are using Vray 2.20.03.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
