there is no big step by step, sorry. i simply open the *.mat file with max 2014.
a saved lib with max 2013 with around 40 shaders is empty now in max 2014, but this still opens in max 2013 (glad i did not save in 2014). there are all png's inside, i have to check this, maybe it will work with jpg.
one i worked on last week and saved with max 2014 is also empty, another mat-file only show up 4 of around 10.

Reason: typo
Have you made sure that "Incompatible" materials are visible in the library? If your renderer is anything other than vray that might explain why they're not visible.

BUT - this only happens if i start max 2014 with new szene - than i can't load some mat-lib in correct way.
if i open some project, than i can load any mat-lib and it shows up fine.
Alex, thank's for your help!
Right but have you checked that your default renderer is Vray? Because if it's MR then when you open a new fresh scene the issue I've described might happen. This would explain why the materials are visible if you open an existing Vray scene.

I thought that would be it! Glad you sorted it... it's a nice timesaver if you set Vray to default renderer and use your most common settings. saves a lot of time for most new scenes.
