  • Ptex Mudbox Displacement

    Hello,

I am having an issue with my subdivision setting when I extract my ptex displacement map from Mudbox. The subdivision settings work fine regarding the extraction of my normal mapping but when I do the same procedure for the displ I get that. (pic) If I use raycast I can get a more reasonable result but it is still less than perfect. Anybody got any ideas?

Is it normal displacement or vector one? Also, what file format are you saving to?

it is normal displacement. I am saving to 32bit. ptex

The V-Ray Ptex texture has an option to reverse the vertex order - try it to see if it helps. Also, make sure that your model is not changed on the way from Mudbox to Maya.

Then it would be best to get us the relevant files (.mud + .max) to vray@chaosgroup.com so that we can check out what's wrong.

            Best regards,

Thanks, but when I do a test with a simple box following the procedures I get perfect results. Everything works the way is should. I must be doing something wrong somewhere.

I can't really say for sure without a scene... Btw are you doing any modification on the mesh in 3ds Max, like a Turbosmooth or Meshsmooth modifier? Because that won't work... you need to subdivide using the VRayDisplacementMod modifier. Also, if you are importing the mesh as an .obj file in 3ds Max, did you turn off the "Reorder vertices" option in the .obj importer?

                Best regards,

No turbo smooth no modifications.....if I got the results with a test object...... I will do some tests to see what went wrong. no reorder vertices, could it be something with using the pose tools in mudbox?

Just tries another simple box test. It is the pose tool. When I pose the mesh in mudbox and then export that posed mesh, I get the broken ptex displacement. So..... I'm not suppose to pose anything?? Is this right or am I doing something else wrong?

If you pose the mesh in your mudbox workflow and then export the lowest level back shouldn't the ptex displace work?

That's correct, it should work fine (and it does work fine for me). Btw, which V-Ray version are you using?

                      Best regards,
