caustics dont show up if diffuse is 100% black

hello, just some help for understandig this please:

where is connection between caustics and diffuse color?

if diffuse is 100% black, they dont show up. its fine with 100% white.

Can you post the material of the ring? Caustics normally only have an effect on the diffuse component of a material, but the images look odd...
