  • Vraydisplacement problems

I have an odd problem. I'm using 4 render nodes all able to see the displacement maps across the network. I know this for sure because when I use max's displace modifier the render nodes render the displacement without a problem, however when using vraydisplacement modifier the render nodes don't seem to be able to see the displacement maps.

    Any ideas what's happen ?

okay, it seems that this problem is intermittent. I've had this problem with max 2012 and vray in general and normally I have to restart the main workstation but it didn't happen as much as it is now. If I log into each of the render nodes I can see the texture files over the network but for some reason vray/max does not seem able to.

Any help appreciated. I don't want to have to keep restarting my workstation or the render nodes all the time.

Instead of using the (often poor) asset tracking, have you tried using the Bitmap & Photometric paths function, just to check that the file locations are correct?

I've had things show up as "loaded" in the asset tracker and they have messed up in the render, only to find within the bitmap & photometric paths editor they are all missing proper file locations. Just an idea.

This is not the problem as this issue is intermittent meaning that the files can sometimes be seen. I'll double check just in case but I'm fairly confident it is a windows/vray/max issue rather than file location issue.

I've got my firewalls off..in fact nothing has changed since using max 2012 apart from now I'm using max 2014 and the latest vray.

We had an issue where we didn't detect the displacement modifier in XRef'd scenes, but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it.

          Best regards,

To better help you with the issue can you tell us a few things: what windows are you running, what type of texture map are you using for the displacement, how many maps are there (are there a lot) or just a few. Is there any error message that the slave prints during rendering?

Hi. I am running windows 7 pro 64bit on my main machine one of my render nodes, and windows XP 64bit on the remaining three render nodes. Each machine has 24gb of ram.

I am using a PSD file as the texture for the displacement. There are six maps in total for the displacement. There are a number of fairly large texture maps used throughout the rest of the scene which is fairly simple. The main object I'm having problems with is the only one using vray displacement.

No errors are popping up on any render node and I've also checked the vraylog.txt files for each with no errors showing there either.
                Regards

Try convert your displacement to another format like exr, or tif, if its 8 bit then can be whatever, could be something with the psd format (I don't know).

I would also recommend to put the same windows on all the machines just to eliminate network issues, newer win does have different protocols then win xp, so who knows what may go on there. I have 7 machines on win 7 x64 network and all is fine. Granted I don't use max 2014 yet..

It seems it was because PSD's were being used. I converted them to PNG's and everything seems fine now. Thanks for the help.
