i've always faded things in and out in post, but this time this is really inconvenient. is it me, or is there still a lot of issues doing this in render?
keyed visibility track, refraction and opacity all produce flickery results, which also seems to escalate with backburner.

anyone know some setting or material trick i could try to make this work better?

Do you mean distance fade out effect to be achieved ?

no, just a simple keyed opacity for instance, that goes from fully visible to invisible over 25 frames

        Ah, yes.
Increasing the "Max transp. levels" parameter should avoid any artifacts in this situation. Don't know how complicated are your objects but probably 50 is not enough.
Let me know if this helps.
