  • Saving out file gamma/ colour issue

    Hey everyone

I'm working on a scene of an interior and I have noticed that when i save my image out from the frame buffer I am getting a washed out image. (nealcomputer.jpg)

I have rendered the exact same scene on a colleges computer and he gets the same result displayed in the frame buffer. (markscomputer.jpg)

I am saving the image override gamma 1.0.

I have never had this happen before and completely baffled what is causing this?

    Hope you can help

    Cheers

    Neal.

    Hi,

Could you try to open the saved image with different photo application?
Maybe the native 3ds max "View image file", for an example.

Did you recently get a new screen? Perhaps the profile for the screen was loaded in Windows and that is why the frame buffer shows slightly different than the jpg when opened
      Kind Regards,

I think I'm having the same problem as the OP. I tried to open the saved picture in different apps (Photoshop/Xnview/3dsmax) but all show me the same result which is different from the vray framebuffer.
My gamma settings are 2.2 inside GAMMA/LUT
And inside color mapping I have: 2.2 Gamma + affect background and mode = color mapping only (no gamma)
I usually save as tiff and leave it on automatic during the saving process.
The teapot in the example below is not using any diffuse map it's just black color so this doesn't seem to be related to faulty input gamma.

We have noticed this problem also, but I am almost certain that it is probably to do with your colour set up in Photoshop. I have not had time to look into it, but I would guess that the colour space in photoshop is not the same as in the g-buffer, and there is a possibility that you have "proof setup" set on/off/incorrectly.

I hope some of these ideas may help to find a solution.

Just to come back to this point

If you have a profile loaded for your monitor in windows, most programs will use this profile to display your jpg, some older programs doesnt read it and just displays sRGB.

Max is NOT colour managed and therefore your frame buffer will look different to photoshop. In the vray frame buffer however you can add your monitor's profile and then your frame buffer and photoshop will display the same (if you are using LWF)

If you burn in your gamma to your jpg or tga when saving from the frame buffer, then it WILL look different in your frame buffer compared to opening the jpg in another program. However if you open this saved jpg in ram player in max and then comprare it to photoshop, you will get the same image
