  • Can I run two versions of vray, each on a different version of Max, on a render node?

    Hi,

I am having problems with my render nodes. I had them set up with Max 2014 and Vray 2.40.04, and when starting the distributed render, a max shell would start and sit there quite happily.

I then needed to render a scene in Max 2013. So I installed it on the nodes, and installed vray 2.30.01 for Max 2013. All the paths were correct. I have not checked if it renders correctly, but the Max 2013 shell loads and is quite happy. However, We needed to render in Max2014, so I closed the 2013 vray distributed, thus closing Max2013(vray 2.30.01), and started the Max2014(vray 2.40.04). This time all was not well. Max starts, but when it gets to a certain amount of memory, it just closes.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Bill

Yes - two versions of Vray installed on separate Max installations is possible. I've just run a simple test with the same Max and V-Ray versions and I could confirm it works. Have you also installed 3DSMax 2013 just before Vray 2.30.01 installation ?
A similar issue appears when BackBurner job is not started on the slave-machine - it starts to load Max and after a few seconds it closes it and then the same thing repeats.

Could you please first try to restart the machine and to run Vray 2.40.04 spawner first - is it work or not ?
If it loads normally then the BackBurner job is not related - but if it crash appear again then at leas one BackBurner job must be started.

Another option that you have is to reinstall Vray 2.40.04 after Vray 2.30.01 - and run the test again.

      thanks for the reply.

The order of installation was this:
      On one day:
      Max 2014
      Vray 2.40.04

      On another day:
      Max 2013
      Vray 2.30.01

As I remember I ran the Vray 2.30.01 for Max 2013 first, and it was stable. Then I tried Vray 2.40.04 for Max 2014 and it was not. However I tried running the vray 2.40.04 alone and it did not work still.

I am going to try a clean start on one of the machines, and install in the followig order to see if that makes a difference: Max 2013; Vray 2.30.01; Max 2014; Vray 2.40.04. I have completed the First two stages of this, and Max 2013 and Vray 2.30.01 workes perfectly.

I'll let you know how I get on.

        Follow Svetlozar's advice.

I've got 6 Max versions on my render nodes from the various projects I've had to keep bringing back to life. All work just fine and all play nice. Running a backburner job first is a must though.

        Good luck!

          What do you mean?
In the past I have had problems of compatibility with the vray spawner and backburner, but I got around it by making sure that a backburner spawner service wasn't running if I needed to run a distributed render. Since having problems between backburner and vray spawner, I have never run them on the same computer at the same time.

          Cheers for all the help.

I have got Max 2013 and Vray 2.30.01 working and stable, and then installed Max 2014 and vray 2.40.04. Now both sets are running and stable.

When you initially install Max on the rendernodes, I have to run a backburner job through the farm first. This apparently finalizes some initial Max setup, usually creating folders in the user directory and other things. (I don't know all of the things changed)

Once that has been done. You can turn off backburner and then start up the VRaySpawner. I can't DR using my farm until I have done those steps. After that, all is usually pretty good.
