  • Weird colors from materials

When I import an FBX file or Revit file into 3DS, I apply a few V-Ray materials to some of the objects and render and it looks fine. Then, when I close 3DS and reopen it later, something happens to a few materials that cause crazy colors to fill the render. Does anyone know what causes this? This happens to basically every model that I work on.

I should also point out that it is almost always my gypsum board, acoustical ceiling tile, and metal stud materials. If I select all objects with those materials through the material explorer and apply a default material it fixes the problem, but it is just an annoying step that I am trying to figure out how to avoid.

    That's weird indeed - are there scenes/materials linked to any external-materials/scenes ?
It is strange why these materials are changed upon opening the scene.
Can you send us one example scene to investigate it here ?
What V-Ray and Max versions are you using ?

I should have mentioned that the scenes were linked, not just imported. The problem happened when I linked a Revit file as well as an FBX. But in past experiences I have had it happen when I just import the file. I should also point out that the original file remains unchanged in the process, as in, I save the Revit file, close Revit, link it in 3ds, do a little work, save and close, open it 2 minutes later and the problem occurs.

I will see if I can recreate the problem in another file. I don't want to send this exact file as it is a project for my company.

      I am using V-Ray 2.40.04 and 3ds 2013.

I don't think that this is related to Vray - the materials are updated because both files are linked to each other.
Could you please try to import/merge FBX file instead of linking it.
