  • FBX export results black materials

    Hello,

we are a Maya-based shop, but we need to convert some 3ds max scenes with V-Ray materials for Maya.

In the past we have done this via FBX. After importing into Maya, we got Maya phong shader with the proper textures connected and assigned to the right geometry.

Now we have the problem that all the materials in the FBX-file are black and have no textures connected. The 3ds max 9 scene is prepared for V-Ray 1.5 SP1 and was exported with 3ds max 2014 and also imported into Maya 2014 via FBX v2014.

When we use the V-Ray demo version then at least the materials have different diffuse color, but also no textures...

As we need to convert over 30 scene with a lot of materials and textures, it would be a pain in the a.. to rebuild all the shaders in Maya.

    Any tips+tricks for us?

    TIA,
    Lars

are the textures in max simply connected as bitmap to color slots? or are they running through some sort of max node, that could mess with things.

Thanks Dimtry, but most of them seems to be simply plugged into color slots.

Here is the error message during the fbx export from 3ds max and a screenshot of the material editor.

Really hope that with V-Ray 3.0 it will be possible to interchange scenes much easier.

You could try a different fbx format, see if that would make a difference. Also you could try manually create a simple scene with few spheres and vray mtls with maps and export those to maya. If this method works on your test but not on your actual scene, this would mean there is some kind of issue with those materials. Perhaps running a material converter on them could help? If that doesn't help post here a small part of that scene and we could try to help you

Thanks again for your help, Dmitry.

But I guess, we need to rebuild the shader in Maya. I mean we need to do it anyway, would have been just a bit easier with the intact texture connections.

We tried to export a vrscene file and grab the materials in Maya from it, but there were no materials in the file.

Need to check if I can upolad a stripped version of the scene here.

I've actually recently exported tree models from max/vray to maya via fbx and everything came through, well with phong shaders but maps were plugged in correctly.

Okay, here are two stripped down 3ds max scenes with just one wall, but with all the shaders. Dmitry can you please load them in Max and take a look?

              TIA,
              Lars

Tried your scene and yes could not export the material with maps. Its really strange, because I then tried my other scene and materials did export with maps...Anyway, you might want to try just running this script, since once you convert the vray material to max materials then the maps also export. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dmitry. We will test the scenes with the conversion script. Then we will rebuild the scenes in Maya. The right job for dark and cold winter evenings
