  • Asset tracking, etc

I on numerous projects have had this issue, but never really gave it a second thought until a few projects recently when my use of third party models, etc came into play.

Basically I always have "show missing maps/files" checked in the vray system, so that it notifies me if there is anything missing; particularly useful when network rendering. The problem however is that the message is usually incredibly cryptic, such as: "ä referenced by ô". What the hell is that?!

Invariably I am finding that this is caused by the maps in question being within a VRay Dirt map, and for whatever reason the software can't read the names from within it. This is incredibly frustrating on large projects, causing me to have to go through every texture to manually find out where the missing maps are.

    Please fix it?

Which V-Ray build are you using? I think we fixed the messages a while ago.

On Max, relink Bitmap works pretty well. No more manual tweaking anymore.

But I'm pretty sure you are aware about it already.

Vlado is right - we have it fixed in the 3.0 version but it is not ported to 2.40.04.

As a side note/question to you chaos guys:
How many of these features/fixes will you put into the existing 2.40.04 version?
I was hoping most and that you basically put all new features and fancy toys into 3, but let the rest og us actually get these bug-fixes as we might not be able to upgrade yet.

We do push some of these to the 2.40 branch, yes. If you check the nightly builds site, you will see that there are builds for V-Ray 2.40 and they are occasionally updated - the fixes will go into the next 2.5 service pack.

              Best regards,
              Vlado

Yes....I'm ashamed to say I actually have no idea where to find these mysterious nightly builds. Do I need some privileged access from the gatekeeper?

You are not the only one, though I daren't install new versions too often!

Is there some way to see what is added/fixed for these builds before one commits to installing and possibly breaking stuff?

I would love to have an automatic update system so VRay just gets updated across our farm with one click. It's the ONE thing Vue is very good at, you update the license server and all the slaves update automatically.

                            That is a fantastic idea.

I think different render managers like Deadline can already do that - or at least, make it easier to use global network installs for plugins.
