  • Noise in Bokeh/Specular

I'm working on a razor scene for a company that has a Autumn promo and I keep getting noise in my bokeh balls.

Dof subdivs = 32 tested up to 60 no difference
Adaptive DMC = 1-4 tested 2-6 no difference
Clr thres = 0.003 tested 0.01 no difference

    DMC Sampler
    Adaptive amount = 0.85
    Noise threshold = 0.003

    Sub-Pixel mapping is on

What magic value am I missing to fix this?

Firstly the Adaptive DMC will only use the colour threshold setting if you've told it to, otherwise it will use the DMC sampler value (which I've just spotted you have set to the same value); have you checked the "use clr threshold" button?

Secondly, increasing the colour threshold from 0.003 to 0.01 is the opposite of what you want to be doing for your particular problem. You need to be reducing it, if anything. Though with that said, 0.003 is very low indeed...

Your thresholds, it seems to me are very low and should result in some very noise free renders; but only if the antialising sampler is given enough leeway. Try increasing adaptive DMC max to 16 or higher, because the 6 you have it set at is fairly low (the universal settings say to set it to 100).

Tnx for your respone! Altough I don't use the universal settings I did try to set is to 1-100. Rendered 1 bucket but the result the same but extreme amounts of render time. I did get better results using 72 DOF subdivs... but also very long render times. Somehow I also get more light when I up the subdivs in de DOF settings. The balls are smoother but lighter.

The render time is a direct result of how low your noise thresholds are set. The lower the noise threshold, the more VRay will try to smooth it out with the antialiasing filter. 0.005 is usually more than sufficient.

I made a simple tests and increasing DOF subdivisions makes the Bokeh much smoother but according to your first post this doesn't help.
Would it be possible to send us stripped down version of the scene for investigation ?

Yes I can sent the file. Do you want is @ support@chaosgroup.com?

This is with 60subs in the DOF camera settings. Everything is smooth but the specular highlights.Click image for larger version

Yes - you could send it to support@chaosgroup.com if the scene could pass through email, if not you could request access to our FTP server on the same email-address.
Please include a link to this thread cause we need to know where the scene comes from.

Thank you very much in advance.

                      Hey mate,
I wonder if this has any link with the fact that you don't subdivide your specular enough.
I was quite surprised few weeks ago when I had some issues with speculars as well :
                      http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...ecular-subdivs

So it seams that the subdivision of the speculars are straightly linked to the lights subdivs, so try to up all your light subdivs, and counter balance by lowering your mats subdivs if needed.
                      Hope this could help.
