  • VrayDisplacementMod - Cache Normals

I've been using the Static Geometry and Cache Normals check boxes to greatly speed up rendering on an image I've been working on. No problems what so ever.

However, I've tried to apply the same approach to another scene and when I turn on 'Cache Normals' the displacement acts really strangely.

Like I said, I have it working perfectly in another scene. This is in V-Ray 3.00.02, no DR.

Any chance to send both scenes in order to find out what's going on?

If you are using a 3ds Max Noise texture somewhere in that, it's normal, the texture is buggy (loses a lot of precision) ever since 3ds Max went 64-bit. It would be better to use f.e. Bercon noise.

Svetlozar - I'll see if I can get a section of that scene to you (it's pretty big)

Vlado - I can't open it right now but I'm 99.9% sure there's no procedural noise in there. The displacement is derived from Zbrush across multiple 8192 textures. The 0.1% of uncertainty is because I can't guarantee I didn't put noise in the bump slot of the material. Would that affect things in this way?

No, bump mapping is not a problem. I see some noise in the normals in the first set of renders, which is why I asked.

Please, could you elaborate on when we should use bercon noise instead of the 3dsmax noise?
