  • Vray crashes scene rendering (after switching from 2.4 to 3.0.0.2)

As the title says, I have a scene that had no problems before in 2.4.
I have kept the default options for a 2.4 scene (embree off, probalisitic lights off, max ray off).
The render proceeds OK & finishes BUT at the very end when there are only a few buckets left it crashes.
The Rendering dialog says "Rendering image...:done" but 3dsMax(2014) is completely buggered at this stage (cannot
do anything with it - cannot even zoom in on the VFB). Only option is to force quit max

Are you saving the file to a location that vray/max can't find?

In this case i am not saving the file anywhere as its just for testing purposes. (so both the 3dsMax file save & the Vray Frame Buffer have no file save option enabled. Im just rendering to the Vray VFB.

Good find; would it be possible to send me the scene to vlado@chaosgroup.com so that we can fix this as soon as possible?

        Best regards,
        Vlado

Hi Vlado - I sent you the scene just now (& sent it yesterday to vray@chaosgroup.com).
If you cannot replicate the crash please let me know & i'll see what i can do to give you better understanding of what is happening at my end. For now i have to go back to v2.4 so i can work on this project again.

& just to confirm - now that i reinstalled 2.4, the scene renders successfully with no crash at the end.
I do get an error message "warning: Texture "Map #3" returned an invalid bump normal"
Currently i have no way of finding, isolating & removing that Map

          thx

Leo, Do you have any standard max "normal bump" maps?
            Usually evermotion models have them.
If you think you might have them let me know and I will send you a script that replaces "normal bump" maps with "Vray normal bump" maps

Thankyou for the offer. The vray log says "warning: Texture "Map #3" returned an invalid bump normal" so that might be something worth doing. For sure, i do not "need" those normal maps (since i did not create or apply them myself - they must have come in from some third part models as you say - and those objects will only be seen from quite a large distance away from the camera). A script that could strip those out would be great - or replace them with a vray version as you suggest.

                Script for normals

Chris, any chance of you posting that script? Pretty please?

Hi Vlado - did you manage to recreate the problem with the supplied scene ?

Yes, I think so - the crash has to do with the "curve" VFB color correction, though the error originally comes from a NaN pixel in the image and I'm looking into what's causing it.

                      Best regards,
                      Vlado

OK - thanks. Do you know of a "workaround" that would enable me to install 3 again & render this scene ? not a problem - just curious.

Try disabling the curve color correction in the VFB and see if it helps.

Does this work now OK with the new build ? (3.0.0.3) I do not currently have 3 installed.

Not yet; I fixed it just last week. It will go out in 3.00.04 or you can email me directly to vlado@chaosgroup.com for the update.
