  • Vray 3.00.03 Clipper

Hi I've tested with the new Clipper object - which is by the way a great feature - but i guess its just an early implementation and not meant for complex cuts.
I was trying to set a cut with 2 clipper objects.

the result showed that the first clipper in red had the desired effect. the second clipper (green) in another direction worked too, but also showed the resulting clipping fillings in the already disappeared parts from the first clipper.

I guess its not meant to use more that 2 clipper at once - but i'd like to know if in future there would be options to use free form clipper objects.

Can you attach the scene for that? The clipper does have a few limitations right now, but it should be possible to use several clippers.

      Hi Vlado,

Can you post the limitations?...I also tried to use the clipper and it had similar issues.

Mostly it has issues with overlapping faces, even if they are not directly visible, f.e. a cube that lies directly on another box. Unfortunately this is a very common scenario... we will need to figure out some way to make it work.

Hi Vlado ... sure here is the scene striped down with the materials... but basically the scene of the image.

The Object itself was a railcolone generated facade, shouldnt contain too much overlapping faces. it seems more that the green fillings are showing the result if the red clipper wouldnt exist.

Without having vray 3, I'd suggest the most logical solution from the users point of view would be bias threshold (similar to secondary ray bias), then choose the faces that deviate the least from the clipping planes normal.

              Hello

I managed to work around the issue by swapping the two clipper objects. That way the VRayClipper002 is angled and red:

This is a problem with multiple clippers - their effect depends on their creation order and when a ray from the camera reaches the first clipper - it gets shaded even though there is another clipper behind it. We need to take care of this situation and shade the farthest clipper along the ray no matter the creation order.

There are actually a lot of overlapped surfaces according to the Max's xView which are probably the reason for this issue.

I also tried to replicate it on a new scene with the same setup without any overlapping and it worked as expected:

                  Thanks,

yes i'll look into the models - i was sure that the overlapping is just at a minimum, but maybe not.

It was generally just a test how easy it would to adapt with current models and workflow - but i guess i need to prepare a bit before using the clipper.
