  • Vray Car Paint Material - Where is Trace Depth??

Problem I've run into before, put a car with the Vray CarPaintMtl behind glass, and I get no reflections from the CarPaintMtl. Is it a trace depth issue? Where's the trace depth control for the CarPaintMtl???
(Nothing is wrong with the glass, and I've got Trace Reflections checked in the CarPaintMtl)

    Thanks - Chris

Its hocked up for the moment to ur global trace depth in render settings - change them and that should work.

I don't use the global trace depth. I would have to use turn that on? Global Trace Depth doesn't override materials and force them to do 10 or whatever you set it to right? It only sets the maximum trace depth? So if I turn that on and set it to 10, the trace depth in my materials would still be used, but that would for whatever reason give more depth to the CarMaterial?

      Thanks - Chris

I think thats correct. I think that if your global trace is set to 10 and material to 20, then material will get clamped to 10 but not sure. Try see it if works.

We are sorry to inform you but the CarPaintMtl trace depth cannot be changed from the material properties - the only way to increase it is to use Override Depth value from Global Switches tab.
Please note that this value will now override all materials in the scene, their previous value will be replaced with the one you've specified into Override Depth field.

"override all materials" - If I set global trace depth at 8, it will clamp at 8 of course, but will it force materials with 3 trace depth to now have 8?

For Vray 3 is is the same? Seems an odd glitch that you can't put cars behind glass without changing your workflow.

            Thanks - Chris

That's the way it works - it overrides trace depth value for all materials it doesn't just clamp higher values.
No changes in Vray 3.0 on that matter.
We already have that limitation into our system waiting to be resolved, unfortunately we are not able to give any time frames for its implementation.
