Is it possible to use vray lens flare with subpixel mapping? Turning on vray lens flares seems to disable sub pixel mapped despite it remaining checked, as suddenly my scene has artifacts and sparklies.

Tried using the new vray 3 feature 'max ray intensity' to clamp max brightness but it does not help... clamping it at 1.0 or lower causes an unhandled exception too btw

Then the other problem is that during a proper render the lens flares appear briefly only to disappear on the image! They work fine if I use the effects panel to do the rendering however.

    any ideas?

Looks like i have fixed it not showing up in the render... seems like you need to control it from the vray frame buffer window (bottom right button) and not from max effects tab.

Hrmm maybe sub pixel mapping does work but the sparklies are just being hidden by the extra noise.

Hrmm nope, subpixel mapping does not function on the lens flare channel.

Vray Lens Effects are applied on post , I don't think that they should be affected from sub-pixel mapping.
If you still have difficulties with it please attach your scene for investigation or at least send us a screen-shot to see what you are talking about.

Attached is the render with lens effect on and off

the subpixel mapping is on in both images however the same sparkly problem is only present on images without sub pixel mapping if not using the lens flare.

The sparkles are probably an underlying issue with the scene that I have not been able to fix. I have checked the sun / light visibilty and they are all invisible.

              I a bit confused:

First you said that both images are with sub-pixel-mapping and then the issue appears only on images without sub-pixel-mapping?
Could you please give us more information with what parameters are calculated both images?

Can you also send us this scene? You could remove all secondary details and leave only the walls, ceiling, floor and all light-sources.
Thank you very much in advance.

I'm saying that it appears that lens effects operate without subpixel mapping. That lens effects disables subpixel mapping despite it being turned on.

1)my image looks clean with sub pixel mapping.

2)my image looks like crap without sub pixel mapping AND/ OR lens effects turned on.

I can probably post the scene but it is huge and I'll have to do what you say later when im not supposed to deliver these images tomorrow.

Good thread...I think I have gotten nice results once with the lens-effects. I hope you find a solution, but those sparkles do look like not related to lens effect.
In your image without lens effect, there are some suspicious looking areas in the central dark ceiling feature. maybe there is a super bright Vraylightmtl in the scene or possible there is an object with vraylightmtrl intersecting some other geometry? best luck, I wish Chaos would make a detailed tutorial with different type scene examples (like Matt Guetta but more in depth.) Look at itoosoft, for example, they have an exemplary set of tutorials and full sample scenes to learn from, easily accessed from their site.

Is there any way of locating super bright vraylightmtls? Mtl browser I suppose... Ill see what I can find.

There is no super bright vray light mats 3,5,10,...15 is the brightest one.

Oh, well, I guess it depends on the scene. To me, 10 and 15 seem very bright...
I think sometimes I have seen this type of noise and it was somehow because of the Vraylightmtl but hopefully someone has a positive solution.

Have you tried doing the renderings with all the light mats off, and then do renders turning them on, each material at a time? That way, if it is them, you may narrow it down...
                        best luck!

Okay then I shall turn them all down to 1. EDIT: wow there was a hell of a lot of lights 10 + brightness but not many with direct lighting. Will attempt render soon.
