Going completely mad ! Vray sun environment exposure issue

I'm not sure if I'm tired but I've been looking at this scene for the last hour and cannot understand what is going on.

I have rgb 218 vray mat in override. I have a standard vray sun and sky set up. I am exposing for an exterior shot (so naturally the interior would be darker) but it seems the exterior is also very dark and the sun shining on the inside of the object is very dark too. I'm pretty sure this is wrong. Any ideas what the hell is going on ?
