  • vray 3.0 variable bucket size and DR

    Hello guys

is it correct, that the variable bucket size feature does not work with a) DR and/or b)max standard camera?

    Thank you for any info.

    Cheers

No, neither of these is correct. Variable buckets work fine with both DR and standard cameras. They do not work with raw OpenEXR output though.

      well

i'm rendering here an animation with DR, the irradiance map is precomputed and stored.

      a) the renderer stops at the last bucket and waits for a "relative" long time to complete the rendering of the frame

      b) the bucketsize does not change. even the slaves are not utilized anymore. btw. that was the case rendering into png also using max standard buffer though.

      so

in respect to this: would that mean the rendering is finished (no new "buckets" needed) and some computation takes place regarding the data distribution over network? And yes, I'm rendering right now into EXR - passes are required.

Sorry for the lack of knowledge but what do you mean by raw OpenEXR?
        full 32bit EXR output?
if thats is so, that would be a show stopper for our upgrade to vray 3.0 :-/

<shrug>The OpenEXR library cannot handle tiles with varying sizes; so dynamic buckets are automatically disabled when you select raw OpenEXR output. I completely fail to see how this is a show-stopper though...

so saving to VRIMG 32bit (with EXR 32bit output checked) and to EXR 32bit (with EXR 32bit output checked) is ok yes?

sorry i dont understand what do you mean by RAW EXR ....selecting RAW channels in render elements?? or checking the "use EXR 32bit output"? or something else?

We currently have to tick "use EXR 32bit output" everytime we need to play with ZDepth efficiently....if we dont check it, we always see banding int the element as we slide the gamma and exposure....so thats why i am asking

This is a known issue and will be fixed. It has nothing to do with the dynamic buckets though - as I mentioned, dynamic buckets are disabled when rendering to an OpenEXR file. V-Ray does print a warning about that in the messages log. You still get an OpenEXR, just not dynamic buckets.
