  • Distance tex as bump

Sorry I swear this was discussed recently but I cant find the thread...

Ive got a plane and a load of splines with a thickness. Vray Dsitance tex gives me a nice diffuse with black lines on the plane that follow the splines.

Ive tried using it as displacement, which worked, but was far too slow.

Ive tried putting it in the bump slot, but nothing happens. I also tried VrayColor2bump, nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong here?

Essentially Im trying to show paving on a plane without having to model it, as its a complicated design.

Does a similar approach work for you?

      Best regards,

Yes it does, on a new test scene. Whats the important bit here? the output map?

I only use the output map to control the shape of the bump - otherwise by default it will be more like straight chamfer than a curve.

Ah ok, nice, I hadnt really considered that side of things. This seems to all be working fine now in the original scene also.

Is there any way to speed up displacement using the distancetex? This is very simple just lines of paving in a flat ground plane but seems to be very slow.

In V-Ray 3.0 - yes, by using the "static geometry" and "cached normals" options for the displacement. In V-Ray 2.x - not really.
