  • vray ram usage explodes when opening render dialog box

Just swapped out all the maps in my scene for vray hdri maps and converted everything to tiled multi resolution exr files. Not sure why but now when I open the vray render dialog it takes ages to open -- and it goes from using 9GB ram up to 16.5 used...

any idea why this might be happening?

Nope, no idea at all. Would be best if you can get us some way to reproduce this here.

    Best regards,
    Vlado

      Hi,

If I understand correct your issue, as soon as you open the Render settings window, the memory goes up to the max ? You are not doing any renderings at this time ?
      Is it scene dependent ?

Yeah just in this scene. Pretty heavy scene with 6GB of maps on disk... but this only just happened when I converted the maps...

Hi Ruairi - just want to say that Fifty Percent Grey was a huge inspiration for me back in university - gave me a real drive to do well in my course and to go into CG as a career. Cheers!

Would it be possible to send us this scene for investigation?
              What exactly did you convert?

I converted 100+ 4k tiffs (and some various jpgs/bmps etc that were among the assets I was given) to multires exrs and swapped all the maps for vrayhdri maps and all the output curves on the original maps I converted to output nodes (my god this part was tedious since 3ds max doesnt allow scripted access to the map output curve so you have to do it manually.

If you don't mind downloading 6GB of maps etc sure -- I can dropbox
Not posting here for obvious reasons. What's your email?

Would I need to upload the original file + maps too, to compare?

Please send the dropbox links to support@chaosgroup.com and include a link to this thread.
If it is possible include both version of the scene - before and after the conversion.

Thank you very much in advance.

Hey I think I figured it out -- renders fast if I jack up the vrahdri texture cache past 6000MB. Does that sound right? Doesn't seem like I'm saving all that much ram now though, if any...

It is normal to render faster when increasing the texture cache value since Vray won't flush already loaded tiles so often in order to free up memory for new ones.
This however shouldn't have anything to do with ram usage when opening render setup window - does it really resolve the issue?

The maps in the render setup window (env maps etc.) load when you open the window. A small texture cache might explain why it would have to re-load when you open it.

That would be odd. I can't imagine any reason for them to get loaded. Further on, VRayHDRI will load actual texture data only when the texture is actually sampled - either in a render, or in the material editor.
