  • Rendering with Vray-RT in 2.4

    Not sure if this is possible, but if I select V-Ray RT as my "Renderer" instead of my Active Shade in 3D Max, Rendering as CUDA crashes. Am I only suppose to use RT for the Active Shade or is it possible to render an animation with RT in CUDA? If so, what Im I doing wrong?

    Updating::::

    Let me add to this because I haven't received a response and timing is crucial. My boss has read an article where a scene rendered with V-ray took 4 hrs to render a single frame, and the same scene only took 10 mins using Octane Renderer. I'm trying to convince him why we should not switch to Octane and continue to use V-Ray. Since Octane is a GPU rendering engine, I was experimenting with using V-Ray (2.4) as a GPU renderer as well. But not sure if this is possible. I did mention to him Vray 3.0 has a new progressive rendering option, but he needs convincing that it's worth upgrading from 2.4 to 3.0, instead of switching to Octane.

    So if you can assist me, or help me convince my boss why we should stick with V-Ray, that would be great.

    Vray RT could be used as a Production Renderer as well as ActiveShade. This is actually how animations could be rendered with Vray RT.
    Does the scene render without any crashes when using ActiveShade/Vray RT CUDA engine?

    Insufficient memory (Vram) is usually the main reason for the crash when rendering with Cuda engine - this could be confirmed very easy if you run another test on a very simple scene with just a few basic primitives without any lights/materials and etc. If it renders correctly then most probably the issue is memory-related.

    In any case the difference in render times that you got between rendering with Vray and Octane is quite big so if you could provide that scene for investigation we could return some tips about making the render faster. Please include also a final result from both renders.

      Thanks Svetlozar,

      I have a simple scene that was supplied by the Octane Developers of "Screws on Table". No textures, just two materials and three lights. Very simple. Octane rendered it in 27 seconds. But I'm still crashing when using V-Ray RT (CUDA). I've also tested with NO lights and NO materials, still crashed. It is also crashing in ActiveShade with the message: "error during VRay RT initialization in stage 9". Total poly count is around 383k. How can I send this sample scene to show you?
