    What causes this? It's a simple loft, converted into a poly, with a smooth modifier.

    try untick smooth path in loft before convert it to poly, hope this help

        Enable "Prevent Indirect Smoothing" on the smooth modifier sometimes helps with this.

          It's been collapsed, so I don't have access to anything. I might have to rebuild it.

            You can put another smooth modifier on top of the stack and try Codi's suggestion, collapsed or not.

              Are you talking about the dark area on the right? Try a lower threshold on the modifier.

              Also, "Prevent Indirect Smoothing" is found on the smooth modifier, which you still have.
