  • Vray_Displacement colour

    Hi Guys,

I am a total newbie here. First post ever on forums. I am really impressed with vray so far but lots to learn.

My question is what color has zero effect on displacement? I have the displacement I actually want on white background. But everything is been displaced slightly. How do I only effect areas I want?

    Thanks Guys!!

I believe the rule is 8 bit image = black is zero, 16 bit image = grey is zero, 32 bit image = grey is zero but its kinda based on scale of your geo as well in real world. If you have white as a whole color for displacement then of course everything will displace. Think of white is maximum displacement value and black as none.

Different file formats offers different options.

8bit images (range 0.0 to 1.0) - black color(0,0,0) means Zero Displacement, white(0,0,0) means maximum displacement
16bit and 32bit images have much wider range and they could also contain negative values which will cause negative displacement. The Zero Displacement value is again complete black color(0,0,0).

When using 16/32bit images you have to pay attention to Texmap Min and Texmap Max parameter - the default range is 0-1 which is suitable for 8bit images but 16 and 32 bit images usually have values outside that boundaries.
