  • Matte Shadows

I am trying to render with a matte plane, but the shadows are coming out black. Also, when I put a vraysky, with my vraysun, it comes out a blue. I had this working, but something went wrong.

Set the shadows to multiply over the backplate?

I am not sure I understand. Are you talking about a render element? I didn't have to do that when it was working. I am not sure how I got it to work before, but I can't make it work now.

The photo is pasted under the render, in Photoshop. All 32 bit.

I'm not sure whether you're saying the last example is the correct or incorrect version, but it doesn't look correct to me. If you take the the blue-ish shadows from the first example and cut them out using a variety of methods and then set the shadows to multiply over the backplate, I imagine they would come out looking correct (to my eyes anyway).

To be honest the backplate doesn't even look like it has direct lighting. It looks overcast...

The last image is correct, but the shadows are to dark. The photo is just something I grabbed; it isn't the one that will be used. I was getting nice soft and much lighter shadows earlier, but I can't reproduce it. I didn't have to use a cut/paste solution, before.

Then as per usual you should post a scene so someone can take a look at it.

Shadows aren't black btw. GI makes them blue. Perhaps there's something going on with your GI settings? Does the matte object have some setting to do with GI that's mucked it up?

Okay, I got it. I used a vraydome (made it invisible) + vraysun, with a black background. Thanks for the help!
