  • Disabling Glossy Effects in the Global switches still renders specular

    Hello,
is this supposed to happen? I am on 3.00.08
    I remember it didn't happen in 2.4

    Regards

It did happen in 2.4, there's no change there. It only changes the reflections, not the highlights.

    Best regards,

Okay, thanks for the info. Is there a way to globally disable specular calulations?

      Regards

Not that I know of. What would be the use case for this?

        Best regards,

There have been many calls for Vray to have specular and reflection contribution controls for lights etc. so you can properly separate the specular contribution and reflection contribution from a light's intensity/multiplier, for example. There are a great many occasions in my work where I would love a light to have a strong specular contribution and reflection, for example, but to have it's actual multi/intensity quite low so that it doesn't blow out the area around it/being lit by it. Currently I'm having to save out a lower exposed version of the render/frames and comp it in afterwards, which is quite tedious. Being able to have a light illuminate nicely for your exposure but have a much stronger/weaker reflection and/or specular contribution would be fantastic. Of course another workaround is to use two lights in the same position, one with spec/ref and a low intensity, then one without spec/ref and with a larger intensity, but again this is tedious and problematic.

I really, really hope this is something you can work into Vray soon, as it would save a huge amount of time and would open up possibilities for many use cases.

Would be great to have that contribution parameter in the materials, too. Often the specular highlight is way too strong, making it difficult to get clean edges sometimes. It would be great if you could just tone down the specular component for a specific material.

Well, you are in luck - that particular feature is already implemented for V-Ray 3.10 (separate specular/diffuse multipliers for VRayLight's).
