  • Vray 3.1 Opacity Mode

I've tried the new opacity mode, but I'm not quite sure how to use it. So the things I tried didn't result in faster rendertimes. Nothing changed actually.

I have a 2sided material with 2 vraymaterials. I changed both of them together and tested with normal mode, clip and stochastic.

    Can you post your scene?

The normal mode would just evaluate the opacity map, compute the lighting on the surface and continue the transparent ray. The opacity texture is filtered as normal.

The stochastic mode will choose randomly whether to shade the surface as completely transparent or completely opaque. This reduces the number of lighting calculations at the expense of some noise in the result. The opacity texture is filtered as normal.

The clip mode forces the opacity to full black or full white based on the opacity texture value (i.e. not randomly). It also automatically disables filtering for the opacity texture. This is the fastest mode, but might increase flickering if you render an animation.

If you were already using an opacity texture that is either full back or full white (without any grey values at all) and filtering disabled, then there is not going to be much of a difference between the two modes.

Thanks for the explanation vlado. That's why I haven't noticed any improvement, there are no grayvalues in the opacity map. Scene is included in this post. (max 2014 x64). Filtering wasn't disabled as far as I recall. Tried with both IR + LC as BF + LC.

Ok, in this scene there won't be much of a difference I'm afraid. I've tried to explain it better with some examples here:
