  • Directional Light Noise

    Hi All,

We are using the directional option in Vray plane lights and have noticed something odd.

Our light subdivs are at 64, DMC Noise threshold at .05 (for testing), and when directional is set to 0 the light is very clean. As soon as we increse the directional setting it adds allot of noise.

We can remove it by adding allot more subdivs in the light but it seems odd that as the light samples become more directional that there is more noise.

    Has anyone else notice this?

    Hi,

Do you mean this kind of noise ?

If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Yes - but it is more apparent when you render a light with and without directional. You can see in this image the un-directional light is pretty good in terms of noise.

        I also have this problem.
assumed it was just a restriction with the directional parameter which I use often especially in conjunction with fog

Ok, since you've confirmed - it's a known issue and it's scheduled for fixing.

just to add on the issue, if the directional light set to visible to camera, it looks as if there is a gradient texture applied. Normally the light would appear to be white. Will this be fix with update later?

If you mean the actual light (the plane/disc..) it's normal to be rendered like a gradient or black (depends on the angle of the camera). The light rays don't hit the camera, since its directional parameter is changed.
