  • ZDepth & Enable Filtering

We've just noticed a damn bug today.

When disable filtering in ZDepth Render Element, background becaume white, instead of black like all previous version / all other render elements.
This is hardly blocking because we queued about 500 jobs in Deadline with this and we absolutly needed.

    Is it a knowed bug ? is there's a quick workaround ?

    Thanks !

I just tested and I don't have this issue. Are you using the latest version of vray?

It's because of the option to invert the z-buffer and some changes that were needed to make it work with transparency. One solution is to not invert the z-buffer and do any such transformation in post.

No we can't, because when invert is untick, now the background is black.
So furthers objects are at the opposite color of the background witch make results.

This is pretty urgent, i'll take any workaround or nightly

@Cherrioboy : did you uncheck "enable filtering" ?

Could you test your scene with placing a higher value in the zdepth min field? This may fix it if it's currently 0.
Please, inform us how it went.

Woot you made my day !!

Indeed, when minimum value is u pa little bit, then background is OK.

Thanks so munch, that's a easy workaround.

                Hello !

We tried to used the "minimum value" tricks, but we lately saw that didn't really worked.
Something isn't good in Zdepth & After effect had some trouble to use it properly.

BTW we found another workaround that i wanted to share, to see if it can help.

We still use 0 has minimum value but to avoid white background, we force a vraycolor white in 3dsmax environment.
That result a grey in diffuse alpha, but now Z is on black background witch is better for compositing.

We worked all the week to solve this Z problem and it looks like this is the proper workaround at the moment.

Any update we should expect on this particular ZDpeth render element ?

                Thanks !

We really hope this bug gets sorted out. The loss of DOF samples in V-Ray 3.0 means we are doing more DOF in post. Without a proper zpass, this is very difficult.

                    thanks,

It's pretty easy to fix this issue in AfterEffects though, by simply pre-comping the Z-buffer and keying out the white background with a linear color key set to 0% tolerance. Since white would only appear at a distance of 0 (i.e. never), only the background will get removed. Then add a black background with the Channels -> Solid Composite effect and you're good to go.
