  • Quality of Antialiasing

    Hi,
I'v got some nasty jagging around edges of light reflections, I guess I need to use a different aliasing option, could anyone recommend a smoother setting please?

    It's currently -
    Adaptive
    Min shading rate - 1
    Render mask - none
    Divide shading subdivs - on
    Image filter - on
    Filter - Area
    Size 1.0

    Thanks for any help.

      Color threshold: 0.1
      Normal thresh.: Off
      Dof/moblur subd: 6
      Randomize samples: On
      Object outline: Off

ahh you are using "adaptive subdivision" aa, not "adaptive"

switch to "adaptive" and try a min/max of say 2, 6 for starters.. should clear your issue up.

          Hey, thanks for the reply.

It doesn't seem to be getting any better, this is my current setup, I'm adding the Area filter to try and soften the highlights, everything seems jagged...

          Image Sampler
          Adaptive
          Min shading rate: 1
          Divide shading subdivs: On
          Render mask: None
          Image filter: On
          Filter: Area
          Size: 1.8

          Adaptive image sampler
          Min subdivs: 4
          Max subdivs: 10
          Use DMC sampler thresh.: On

          Global DMC
          Adaptive amount: 0.85
          Noise threshold: 0.005
          Lock noise pattern: On
          Min samples: 8

          Environment
          All off

          Colour mapping
          Type: Reinhard
          Gamma: 2.2
          Multiplier: 1
          Burn value: 1
          Sub pixel mapping: Off
          Affect background: On
          Linear workflow: Off
          Clamp output: Off
          Mode: Color mapping only

          Appreciate any help.

Hello ! Maybe try subpixel mapping ON ?

UR reflection is too bright in comparing to light. Either override reflection to be lower or use Vrays AA box 2.0. In either way its a hard one to fix. I would suggest fixing it in post by clamping 32 bit reflection pass to lower vlaue. Alternatively use DOF, Blom, etc.

try playing with the max ray intensity setting. this will clamp your bright highlights without killing the dynamic range of your image.

You using IES here? Really feels like IES specular overexposure which I seem to run into all the time. Can you post your specular and reflection channels so we can see where the noise is really coming from?

                    Thanks for all the reply's.

Here are the reflection and specular passes.

                    Cheers.

No IES in the scene. It's a tunnel made of 48 sections, each section has 6 VRay lights, 4 at the top are VRay Plane lights, usual options, multiplier 40, sudivs at 14, directional set to 0.7. 2 at the bottom are VRay mesh lights using a cylinder, multiplier 40, subdivs 14.

                      Cheers.

The Lights are probably too bright and the Image Sampler cannot blend smoothly the pixels which reflects the light and the ones that don't.
If you are using V-Ray 3.x try to decrease the Max Ray Intens value like super gnu suggested.

Reflection Subdivisions of the material should be also increased, what is their current value?

Can you attach a simplified version of the scene for investigation?

You could also try (in this order)

"Soften" image sampler filter with a radius of 4.2

Turn on sub pixel mapping (as others suggested) and set clamping in the color mapping rollout to around 3.0. This is less accurate in terms of representation of highlights, but it typically renders faster requiring less AA, and does a really good job with bright specular reflections.

Reducing the intensity of your light may help as well, as has been suggested already.

But try the soften image filter first.

Just out of curiosity, maybe try setting directionality of the lights to 0 as a test.

Thanks all, clamp helped, direction 0 helped also, and I'll try the soften now.

                            Thanks again for advice, appreciated.

How did Soften help (radius of 3.95 or 4.2 or so)??
