  • Max Hair and Fur calculates loooong before render and after

After transforming vertices, it says V-Ray starting render, then:

    Updating object (HairVrObject001)...
This part takes very long compared to the rest of the calculations and the actual render (maybe 30 percent or more of the calculations)

Then after a frame is done, before it goes to the next frame it again says "Hair and Fur", not sure what it's doing here, maybe unloading the hair?
Is all this normal? Is all it doing basically generating geometry from the hair strands at rendertime and that's why it's taking so long?
Is it something ChaosGroup can make faster or is it purely a Max thing?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

I'm afraid it's the Hair&Fur modifier itself. I know that Joe Alter did make some improvements to the hair generation engine (like multithreading), not sure if these are in 3ds Max though. Which Max version are you using?

    Best regards,

Yep, this is how native 3dsmax Hair & Fur works.
If you are using regularly hair, i can just suggest you to move to Ornatrix or HairFarm

I only encountered this problem when using any maps in the hair and fur modifier...but I donĀ“t know many occasions where you would be fine WITHOUT any maps, so yeah, if you have to use it more regularily you should consider the aforementioned plugins.
