  • Vraymesh (preview from file) viewport performance issues

I have 198 instances of vraymeshes all being previewed from file. The viewport performance is chugging ! I have 2 x GTX 980 in SLI. When I convert them to all show whole mesh the performance is fine.

Try the "preview from file (faces)" option.

This helps but I actually realised that the file I have (from someone else) has a lot of grouped meshes. I did read recently there is some major viewport issues with grouped items. Never known it to be this bad ! Even ungrouping something makes 3dsmax unresponsive for some time. Hope they update this soon !

Note: I forgot to say that I'm using max 2016.

Does the performance restores if the groups are removed?
Does it work fine with other V-Ray Proxy modes: bounding box/point etc, or if the original meshes are used instead V-Ray proxies?

Once I have waited for ages waiting for max 2016 to ungroup everything (max problem) I still have to select preview from file (faces) in order to restore viewport performance. Other modes like bounding box work fine. Point mode just blanks the mesh completely. It would be a mammoth task to convert all the meshes in the scene. I do however think that view full mesh is still faster than just "preview from file"

No, it's not really; speed should be exactly the same between full mesh and "preview from file (faces)". It is only the edges mode that causes a slowdown.
