  • VRay Proxies

Okay, I think that I am screwed. I have 1000's of proxies that were shaped wrong, so I selected them all and scaled them stumpier. Also, I noticed that some were upside down, so I rotated them. Now the client wants to change the plant, so I simply recreated the proxy, however, now they are all scaled wrong, due to my previously mentioned stunt. I tried to xform, but it didn't work. Is there any fix? I'll go postal if I have to add these 1000's of plants back.

Holy crap! Flip axis did it. I was just trying anything I could and that did it.

glad you sorted it but are you using soulburn scripts pack?

some in there scripts that would mean completely replacing them would be easy.

also you if you set scale to use pivot center, then you should just be able to right click on scale and type 100 in each of x y z to get back to normal.

I tried right mouse clicking to reset the spinner and that didn't work. Let me try typing it in.

I do have the Soulburn script pack. I'll look in there, too, hopefully it is named something that makes sense.

well with soulburn you could just select all the trees you want to replace. then use the object replacer to replace them all with the new proxy.

then I would run the transform randomizer, to get a bit of a random scale, and the random z rotate 0- 360 (though you must have pivot set to center or your model will go everywhere)

also what I've started doing recently with vray 3 is using the vraymultisubmap to get random hue, brightness for the trees, similar to what you would do with the forest colour map. but now can be done to any of the objects in the scene.

is that any different then just creating a new proxy, renaming the old one?

I originally used the 3DS Max graphite painter tool and set random size and scale, which worked great.

do you mean just relinking to a new vrmesh?

the way I have my library set up, is a max file with a full mesh. then another max file with a vray proxy in that has all materials applied, and linked to the vrmesh. so i never really touch the vrmesh files directly. so I would merge the new tree in from the library which is a just a vray proxy inside a max file, and replace the old trees with that. replacing it that way will replace material and any scales you have with the new proxy. (though check the object replacer options because it allow you to keep them too if you want)

                          sorry vraymultisubtex.

                          http://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/V...RayMultiSubTex

I normally wire (i use slate editor) a few copies of the same leaf texture through different colour correct nodes, each changing either hue, gain, gamma, etc... wire those into 3 or 4 slots of the vraymultisubtex, and set it to random by render id. I also untick the blend with map box.

I found slight hue changes worked quite well.

this with a bit of random scale and rotation on the proxies helps a lot of make it look like your not repeating the same tree everywhere.

I did find that, but it looks rather complicated and tonight, I am not up for learning . I was hoping to see a simple % slider.
